MATRIX, the mathematics education society of Cluster Innovation Centre, University of Delhi organized its inaugural event for university students, teachers and educators on 5th October 2016. The objective of the society is to popularize mathematics education and to provide an opportunity for participants to engage with mathematics in a fun and playful way. The event saw attendance from over 100 students participating in various activities. It was open and free for anyone who wanted to get a taste of mathematics beyond textbooks and exams.
The team hosted a series of competitions throughout the day. The first was a Mathematics Quiz requiring participants to identify the application of mathematics around them. It was followed by the screening of the movie “The May Who Knew Infinity” starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons. The movie beautifully depicts the story of the life and academic career of the pioneer Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and his friendship with his mentor, Professor G.H. Hardy. It highlights the struggles of Ramanujan and attempts to break the stereotypical image of mathematicians in society.
The highlight of the day was “Mathematical Rangoli” where 10 teams from different colleges showcased their artistic skills embedding mathematics and conveying its significance through their piece. The teams were judged not only on the beautiful design of rangoli they made but also on the supporting arguments they gave as to how their design associated with mathematics in real life and/or mathematics education in general. The last competitive activity of the day was a series of mathematical games like “Poles Apart” and “Tangram Puzzles” which required participants to put their creative caps on and solve interesting hands-on puzzles around common shapes and sizes.
In addition to the competitions, the event had participants engaged in various games and activities like Chess Based Games, Dimension Destination (physical game on math communication), Number Polygon and Mathematical Jigsaw Puzzle. The day ended with a prize distribution ceremony. The organizing team of MATRIX 1.0 would like to thank MAG Initiatives for supporting the event.
