Introduction to GeoGebra Workshop with JNV

July - August 2020, New Delhi, India.

After a similar face-to-face workshop organized in September 2019, MATRIX this time organized a series of three-day, online workshop for senior secondary (PGT) mathematics teachers on GeoGebra. These workshops were jointly organized by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti to enhance the capacity of their teachers in using interactive, digital tools for math pedagogy. While the society has conducted similar workshops in the past through in-person interaction, these were the first set of online workshops organized by MATRIX. Several teachers from each of the eight regions of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas participated in the extensive hands-on workshop.

GeoGebra is an interactive geometry, algebra, statistics, and calculus application, intended for learning and teaching mathematics and science from primary school to university level. The workshops focused on introducing teachers to the tool, enabling them to make use of the existing GeoGebra resources available online, and being an active part of the online community. In addition to learning about how to create original applets, the teachers gained knowledge about identifying applets aligned to their curricular and classroom needs and creating an original repository of GeoGebra resources on geogebra.org.

While the first day of each workshop was about familiarizing the participants with the vast online community, creating groups to share GeoGebra resources and tapping into the availability of over one million existing resources, the second day focussed on using the various tools available in GeoGebra to create original applets aligned with textbook problems that the teachers encounter on a regular basis. The workshop concluded with teachers presenting the applets they created and sharing them with the other participants in the workshop. MATRIX also provided the teachers with a set of manuals, tutorials, and step-by-step guides available online to support their continuous learning and eventual mastery of the software.

The workshop was organized by Dr. Jyoti Sharma, CIC and Mr. Gyanendra Kumar, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. The details of the workshops are as follows:

Workshop 1: 29th - 31st July 2020. Facilitator: Robin Sharma, Co-Facilitator: Tarun Aggarwal. 24 master trainers, 3 from all 8 Indian regions of JNV, were trained in this workshop. Teachers trained in this workshop would go on to train other senior secondary teachers from their region.
